Notice to residents under submerged flood waters ONLY Belize Water Services Ltd advises the public that, due to the recent flooding, water supply systems or components, including pipes, private storage tanks and/or wells, which remain submerged in the flood waters, are subject to contamination. Please note that this applies only to those areas with flood waters. All water supplied by BWS is treated and safe. However, submerged lines may become broken and pose a risk. BWS therefore advises that, if your area remains flooded, even if the water is clear coming out from your faucets, it is recommended that you boil or chlorinate water before drinking.
Residents in flooded areas should follow the NEMO/Ministry of Health directions to treat such water. Water must be boiled for several minutes and cooled before drinking; alternately, use 8 drops (1/8 teaspoon) of chlorax or bleach to one gallon of water, stir it well and let it stand for about 30 minutes before consuming.
In addition, the Public is reminded that flood waters by their nature are contaminated and may contain dangerous creatures and objects. As such, they are advised to avoid swimming or extended contact with such waters to prevent any health or other risks.
Again we emphasize that this advisory is only for those who are in flooded areas where their water supply or lines remain submerged.— Belize Water Services For more ...
